The WWE championship match upstages the actual Royal Rumble of the namesake event.
Whether it’s the wrestling ring or the big screen, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson entertains like no other.
The Rock returned to his first love, wrestling, and it was royally triumphant this time around. The People’s Champion is back and has the WWE title to carry around after winning it at the 2013 Royal Rumble.
CM Punk, the former champ who reigned for the last 434 days (very Hulk Hogan-like) finally met his match, but not without some controversy. Like any melodramatic finish, the match was thought to be won by Punk after the lights literally went out at US Airways Center in Phoenix, Ariz. Some nobodies known as The Shield ganged up on the Great One during the blackout, clinching the win for Punk.
We all know Punk would feign ignorance, which is why WWE owner Vince McMahon restarted the match. Minutes later, The Rock finished the match cleanly with The People’s Elbow.
Now it appears The Rock will face WWE poster boy John Cena at WrestleMania this year. It would be a rematch from their bout in 2012, but this time for the strap. Cena won the actual Royal Rumble match, which is usually the final contest of the night.
Thanks to The Rock’s superstar status, the Rumble got bumped down. Cena outlasted 29 other WWE wrestlers, including surprise appearances from Chris Jericho, Goldust and The Godfather. With the victory, Cena gets a title shot at Mania, which will conveniently put him in line to face The Rock.
Their match at WrestleMania XXVIII was spectacular and although rematches aren’t preferred, this will have higher stakes thanks to an actual championship on the line. CM Punk can be a gigantic variable in this match. He can sneak his way into the match, invoking his rematch clause on wrestling’s biggest stage.
A potential triple threat match between The Rock, Cena and Punk for the title would make for an exciting and original main event.
WrestleMania XXIX will be April 7.
